As he approached the tall, dense trees, the light dimmed to a deep grey, revealing a dark shadowy world where all is not as it seems.
The Black Forest in Germany, with its thick canopy eclipsing virtually all daylight, is said to be the inspiration for foreboding legends passed down through generations.
Like Hanzel and Gretel of lore, the forest called him deeper into the darkness.
In the gathering blackness, a powerful creature moved stealthily through the shadows like a stalking tiger. It's wild eyes pierced through the brush. Branches cracked under its weight, and forest animals scattered for shelter as it neared in deference to the creature's shear strength.
Yet, he continued on as the darkness converged around him, snuffing out the last glowing embers of daylight.
The creature moved faster, its pace quickening with the unmistakable skill and ease of an animal completely at one with the Black Forest.
As the creature neared a clearing in the trees, a ray of pale moonlight broke through the darkness, briefly illuminating its muscular form.
Suddenly, the man stopped in his tracks. Frozen, he held his breath. Turning his head slowly, he saw the shining eyes of hundreds of forest creatures, large and small, peering out at him from beneath the brush in all directions.
He stood there for a moment in the pale moonlight, the creatures of the Black Forest crouching before him, then he slowly walked off into the darkness as the animals of the Black Forest breathed a collective sigh of relief.
