“Are you sure we went the right way at the fork a few kilometers back?” she asked nervously. “I think so,” he replied, “but without any signs, I’m not entirely certain. I think this is the path the locals said to take, but my Spanish is a bit rusty, so I may have misunderstood. This is one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet though, and it is entirely cut off from civilization by the huge mountain range we crossed a few hours ago.”

“I don’t know, we should have seen the lodge by now. We probably shouldn’t have come during the rainy season,” she insisted as a bolt of lightning lit the night forest with an explosive flash.

“Well, I can’t see anything in this weather, and I don’t want to wreck the truck this far away from town,” he cautioned, “I fear we may have taken a wrong turn, and we are running low on fuel. We are going to have to pull over and sleep in the car until daylight. Tomorrow we will try to find our way back to town.”

“But I really wanted to see the lodge,” she lamented, “And I’m worried. We could be lost in a remote area and we haven’t seen a filling station since yesterday. How much food and water do we have?” “Not much,” he replied, digging through the backpack and trying to disguise the concern in his voice, “We had planned on eating at the lodge this evening.” “Well, that obviously isn’t going to happen,” she noted. “I know,” he resigned, “Let’s just lay down and try to get some rest; you can take the back seat.”

So they lay in the darkness listening to the deluge of raindrops pelting the rooftop, both secretly wondering if they would make it back.

“Bang, bang, bang!” Just as they were closing their eyes, they were startled alert by something pounding on the car window.

“What was that?!” she yelped. “I don’t know!” he exclaimed, bolting up in the seat. As another flash of lighting lit the night sky, they saw a local woman next to the car. “Venga!" she shouted over the storm. The couple looked at one another and, grabbing their backpacks, they stepped out into the torrential forest rain.

As they followed the woman down a winding jungle path, thoroughly soaked by the pristine forest rain, in the distance they saw a surreal firelight in the treetops. As they drew closer, they followed the woman up a narrow wooden staircase and, as they emerged in the rainforest canopy, they gazed upon platters of fresh pineapples, coconuts, and mangoes, harvested from the prolific tropical forest just hours before, illuminated by the light of dozens of flickering candles.

So they sat down together in the treetops with their unlikely rainforest hosts and a small band of explorers from around the globe, and shared a bountiful jungle feast as they talked and laughed and bonded together far from civilization, to the chorus of the fabulous forest rain.

And when the time came to leave, and they thanked the woman and her family for their hospitality, she simply smiled and replied “Todo es parte de la vida en los tropicos.”
